Four Stanford students were building an app for small businesses. They interviewed the owner of a macaroon shop, who said she had no one to deliver her baked goods for her. Their collective light bulb went off — the students scrapped the app they were working on, and DoorDash was born. 

Well actually, it starts out as PaloAltoDelivery.com, and the site displays menus from local restaurants, along with the students' personal cell phone numbers. Within a few hours, the first user orders prawn pad thai and spring rolls from a nearby Thai restaurant. 

The company makes its first delivery on Jan. 12, 2013. It starts out by making deliveries on the Stanford campus. 

Two months after making its first delivery, it raises $120,000 in funding from Y Combinator. In June, the company changes its name to DoorDash. And in October, it raises $2.4 million from investors.

DoorDash raises $17.3 million in a Series A round led by Sequoia Capital. Sequoia's Alfrid Lin also joins the company's board of directors. 

DoorDash expands operations to Los Angeles, opening DoorDash LA. 

DoorDash raises $40 million in a Series B led by Kleiner Perkins. This round values the company at $600 million.

DoorDash is sued by In-N-Out for trademark infringement and unfair competition. The very next day, DoorDash partners with KFC. The In-N-Out lawsuit is dismissed, but DoorDash agrees to stop delivering from its locations. 

For the first time, DoorDash expands beyond the U.S., and launches in Toronto.

DoorDash begins delivering alcohol in Southern California, in a partnership with Anheuser-Bush.

DoorDash partners with Starship Technologies to test delivery robots.

DoorDash partners with Walmart to deliver groceries. 

The company partners with e-commerce platform Mercato to reach independent grocers and specialty stores.

DoorDash acquires Scotty Lab, a startup that develops self-driving and remote-controlled vehicles. 

The company opens its first ghost kitchen, DoorDash Kitchen, to enable chefs to make delivery meals in commercial-grade kitchens.

Because of COVID-19, DoorDash's revenue accelerates — increasing 226% in Q3 2020 compared to the same quarter a year ago. 

Today, DoorDash has over 390,000 merchants, 18M consumers, and 1M Dashers across the globe. The company raised $2.5 billion before its IPO.
